Millbrook Custom Kitchens, established in 1959, is a family
owned and operated business located in upstate New York, just outside of the
State capital.
In the 1960's, President and Founder, Joe Hochberg developed a
wood grain Formica covered raised panel door, with a unique miter joint and
assembly system. This door design quickly caught on and was produced for the
kitchen industry for many years and can still be found in homes today. Millbrook
also pioneered the steel dowel cabinet construction method, one that has gained
such wide use in the industry, that it is included in the A.W.I. (Architectural
Woodworking Institute) specifications as an accepted cabinet construction. Among
other innovations are a line of corner cabinets that are built in any
combination of dimensions that are needed to maximize the use of space in a
corner, rather then the typical 36" x 36" corner cabinet or the use of a blind
corner cabinets. One of the keys to Millbrook's success is the overwhelming care
that is placed on the design of all of our cabinets and the ability of the
company to constantly react and adjust to changing styles and times. This
attitude caused the next big change at Millbrook.
In 1976, after 17 years of manufacturing by traditional
American construction standards, Millbrook converted their factory to the
European Method of Design called the 32mm system. Being one of the first in the
United States to do so, it became very popular, very quickly. By 1979, Joe
Hochberg was looking for new designs in cabinetry to soften the look of the
European design, which was very square and flat in appearance. Joe had developed
a method of making curved cabinet doors years earlier but had never incorporated
them into Millbrook's offering on their cabinets. By expanding on the idea of
curved doors on kitchen cabinets, Joe designed a complete line of curved
cabinetry that allowed a kitchen designer to design a totally curved kitchen or
one with many curved corner cabinets and end cabinets as easily as design a
straight kitchen, The look was first shown at the National Kitchen & Bath Show
in Miami. FL in 1979 and was an overwhelming success. Other cabinet companies
soon began to offer cabinets with curved doors but none has ever offered a
complete array of curved cabinets like Millbrook offers.
In 1994, the Millbrook factory burned down. Thanks to the
great effort by the Millbrook employees, one of the burned buildings was rebuilt
and cabinet construction started again in 13 working days.
In 1999 Joe Hochberg, who's dedicated his life's work to the
kitchen industry, was inducted into the National Kitchen & Bath Hall of
Fame as the originator of the Curved Kitchen Design and many other contributions
to the industry. His picture and biography are on display at the Hall of Fame located in
Hackettstown, NJ.
Today, Millbrook Kitchens continues to innovate, offering a
full line of Custom Cabinetry to fit any style, from Contemporary to Classic and
everything in-between.
